Aarhus is a relatively small city, which makes it easy to explore on foot, by bike or by bus.
Below are some of our favourite places and experiences — including some tips for discovering
the real Aarhus, not just the typical tourist attractions.
One of our top recommendations. Den Gamle By is much more than a museum. It is like walking into different periods of Danish history, from the 1800s to a typical Danish town in the 1970s.
Children can explore the old houses, shops and workshops and get a feeling for how Danish families lived in the past.
Our tip: Allow at least 2–3 hours.
Visit Den Gamle By →A fantastic museum just south of Aarhus, especially if you are interested in Vikings, the Stone Age and the history of Denmark.
The exhibitions are very visual and interesting for children as well as adults. You can also see the famous Grauballe Man, one of the world's best-preserved bog bodies.
Our tip: After visiting the museum, walk through the forest towards Moesgaard Beach.
Visit Moesgaard →The famous art museum in the centre of Aarhus. Even if modern art isn't really your thing, it is worth going up to the roof and walking through Your Rainbow Panorama.
The circular rainbow-coloured walkway also gives you fantastic views over the city.
Visit ARoS →A small but interesting museum right underneath the streets in the centre of Aarhus, located at the site of the original Viking settlement of Aros — the origin of the name Aarhus.
It is easy to combine with a walk through the city centre.
Visit the Viking Museum →One of our favourite places for a family walk. The Deer Park is located in the beautiful Marselisborg Forest, south of the city.
You can get surprisingly close to the deer and walk through the forest at the same time.
Important: Please don't feed the animals.
More about the Deer Park →A lovely green oasis close to the city centre. Inside the Tropical Houses you can walk through four different climate zones.
There is also a nice playground, making this a good stop if the children need to burn off some energy.
Visit the Botanical Garden →A beautiful sandy beach south of Aarhus, surrounded by forest. It is particularly nice in summer, but the walk through the forest is worth doing at any time of year.

If you have time, we strongly recommend putting the tourist checklist aside for a while and simply experiencing how Aarhus feels as a Danish city.
Here are a few things we enjoy ourselves:
Aarhus has a strong café culture. Instead of always going to the obvious tourist places, walk around the streets of Latinerkvarteret (the Latin Quarter) and Frederiksbjerg.
Stop for coffee, cake or lunch and simply watch everyday life around you.
Mocca City →If everyone in the family wants something different, this is an easy choice. There are many different food stalls under one roof, with food from Denmark and around the world.
Aarhus Street Food →Small streets, old houses, independent shops, cafés and restaurants make this one of the nicest areas of central Aarhus.
Our tip: Combine it with the Viking Museum and a walk along the river at Åboulevarden.
If you want to see a more everyday side of Aarhus, take a walk around Frederiksbjerg. It is a lively residential neighbourhood with small shops, cafés, bakeries and restaurants.
Jægergårdsgade is particularly nice for a stroll and something to eat.
Walk down towards the harbour and visit DOKK1, Aarhus' large cultural and library centre. It is particularly good with children, with plenty of space to play.
From here you can continue along the harbour and see how the old industrial harbour has developed into a modern part of Aarhus.
Visit DOKK1 →A cultural centre in an old railway area with creative workshops, street art, events and a more alternative atmosphere. It gives you a glimpse of the creative side of Aarhus.

Don't feel that you have to see everything. Aarhus is at its best when you slow down a little.
Have a coffee. Walk down a street you haven't planned to visit. Sit by the river. Visit a local bakery. Let the children play in a park.
